Fill up the Forums – by Tony

These are the lyrics to a song I wrote on the plane back from Rome. My wife and I spent a wonderful 21 days in the area and I was over whelmed by the architecture and history of it all, both political and religious. When I started the piece, I expected I was writing a “glory of Rome” kind of praise piece. It didn’t turn out that way….

I stood at the foot of the column of Trajan
My eyes climbed the spiral,
the ground below lurched.

The glory of conquest rose to the skyline
The peak it was topped
By the hand of the church.

When will the blood of the conquered be honored?
Will we build towers to honor their dead?
Fill up the forums and squares with true art works.
Our armies and churches could fund that instead.

I stood in the halls built by god’s army
The beauty was made from
The alms for the poor.

I see on the news that another bombs blasted
I hear that their gods
are better than your’s

When will the blood of the conquered be honored?
Will we build towers to honor their dead?
Fill up the forums and squares with true art works.
Our armies and churches could fund that instead.

Some day some the music for this will appear to me.
